    On its th birthday, the bridge got a new life as Big River Crossing, a rails-to-trails project that unfurled a path for pedestrians and cyclists. At one mile in length, this is the longest pedestrian bridge across the Mississippi. The views it affords are one-of-a-kind too.   The bridge dropped dozens of feet into the Mississippi River at rush hour, sending cars, trucks and buses into the water below. It remains one of the worst accidents in state history.

    The ferry leaves at the base of Canal Street and is an affordable $2 across the Mississippi. As you cross the river, take in all of the boat activity in this very active port.
